Few bedtime trends have spread as quickly as the Sleepy Girl Mocktail. Most versions combine tart cherry juice, magnesium powder, and a fizzy soda. However, the drink often contains more sugar than people expect. Late-evening sugar can work against the calm, steady wind-down many people want before bed. For that reason, we created a lower-sugar Sleepy Girl Mocktail that keeps the flavor and the relaxing ritual.

What’s in the Viral Sleepy Girl Mocktail

The classic recipe uses three ingredients. First, tart cherry juice provides the base and the deep red color. Next, a scoop of magnesium powder, usually magnesium citrate, adds the mineral component. Finally, a sparkling soda, often a prebiotic soda, supplies the fizz.

Montmorency tart cherries naturally contain melatonin, the hormone your body releases to signal that it is time to sleep. Several small studies have linked tart cherry juice to longer, more efficient sleep. Magnesium, meanwhile, helps regulate the nervous system and supports muscle relaxation.

Where the Sugar in This Bedtime Drink Comes From

The trouble lies in the portions. Most viral recipes call for half a cup of tart cherry juice. Even unsweetened juice concentrates the fruit’s natural sugar while removing most of the fiber that slows its absorption. As a result, half a cup typically delivers around 15 grams of sugar, depending on the brand.

The soda adds more. Prebiotic sodas generally contain a few grams of sugar per can. Some people substitute regular ginger ale or lemon-lime soda instead, which can add 30 grams or more. Additionally, “cherry juice cocktail” blends often include added sugar, so it’s worth reading the label.

Ingredient Viral Version Our Lower-Sugar Version
Tart cherry juice ½ cup (about 15 g sugar) ¼ cup unsweetened (about 7 to 8 g sugar)
Fizz Prebiotic or regular soda (about 2 to 35+ g sugar) Plain sparkling water (0 g sugar)
Magnesium Magnesium citrate powder Magnesium glycinate capsules
Approximate total sugar 17 to 50 g About 8 g

Sugar content varies by brand. Check the Nutrition Facts panel on each product.

Our Lower-Sugar Sleepy Girl Mocktail Recipe

This version cuts the juice in half and replaces soda with sparkling water. As a result, it keeps the tart flavor while lowering the sugar load.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup 100% unsweetened tart cherry juice (not a “cocktail” blend)
  • ¾ cup plain or unsweetened flavored sparkling water
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • Ice
  • Optional: a few frozen tart cherries or a sprig of fresh mint

Instructions

  1. Fill a glass with ice.
  1. Pour in the tart cherry juice and lime juice. If using collagen, stir it in until dissolved.
  1. Top with sparkling water and stir gently.
  1. Garnish with cherries or mint, if desired.
  1. Take your magnesium glycinate capsules with the drink, as directed on the label.

Many people enjoy this drink about an hour before bed as part of a consistent evening routine. Because the recipe uses far less juice, it tastes lighter and more refreshing.

For an added boost, consider a scoop of Ageless Collagen. Collagen is naturally rich in glycine, the same calming amino acid found in magnesium glycinate. It also supports healthy skin, hair, nails, and joints.

Why Magnesium Glycinate Works Better in a Sleepy Girl Mocktail

Viral recipes usually rely on magnesium citrate powder. Citrate pulls water into the intestines, which explains why it can loosen stools. That effect is not ideal at bedtime.

Magnesium glycinate takes a different approach. In this form, magnesium binds to glycine, an amino acid. This bond, called chelation, helps the mineral move gently through the digestive tract, so most people tolerate it well. Glycine also plays a calming role in the brain, and researchers have studied it for its effects on sleep quality. Meanwhile, magnesium supports GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps quiet nerve impulses. Together, these actions help the body shift into a relaxed state that supports restful sleep.

Physicians Preference Vitamins Magnesium Glycinate offers this gentle form in convenient capsules. For those who also want cognitive support, Magnesium L-Threonate is another option.
