Why Sleep Formula Is Part of My Night

I have never been a good sleeper. My alarm goes off at 4:45 a.m., and I usually go to bed around 10:30 p.m. With a schedule like that, I cannot afford to lie awake. For most of my life, though, that is exactly what I did.

Since the spring of 2023, I have taken Sleep Formula from Physicians Preference Vitamins every night. In this sleep formula review, I will walk you through what my sleep was like before, why I tried it, and what changed. You will also find the ingredients, the habits that help me, and who might want to try it.

What My Sleep Was Like Before Sleep Formula

Even as a child, I would lie in bed for 30 minutes to an hour before I fell asleep. I would run through all the “what-ifs.”

  • “What if I don’t pass my math test?”
  • “What if I miss the bus?”
  • “What if Tracy doesn’t invite me to her birthday party?”

That never really changed as I got older. My what-ifs just matured.

  • “What if I can’t figure out that problem at work?”
  • “What if my alarm clock doesn’t go off?”
  • “What if what I said over coffee offended Melissa?”

My mind just kept going.

Once I did fall asleep, I usually woke up about twice a night. Five years ago, I was not taking anything for sleep, and I slept through the night maybe once or twice a year.

Then I tried plain melatonin at 5 mg. It helped a little. With it, I slept through the night about three times a month, which was better, but most nights were still interrupted.

Why I Tried Sleep Formula

I joined the marketing team in January 2023, supporting Hotze Health & Wellness Center, Physicians Preference Vitamins, Physicians Preference Pharmacy, and Hotze Beauty. A few months later, I noticed Sleep Formula on the PPV website and read a blog post about it.

When I looked at the label, valerian root caught my eye. I had heard of it before, and a few friends had told me it helped them sleep. Honestly, the lower melatonin amount made me a little skeptical. If 5 mg of melatonin had barely helped, how could 2 mg do any better? Still, the other ingredients made me curious enough to give it a try.

I liked that several of the ingredients come from plants (I love plants!). Passion flower, valerian root, and chamomile all grow in nature, and L-theanine comes from tea leaves. My mom swears by chamomile tea, so seeing it on the label felt familiar. The formula also includes L-tryptophan and two B vitamins, which your body uses to make its own melatonin.

Let’s nerd out a little and look at the ingredients. Each capsule is one serving, and a bottle lasts 60 nights. Here is what is inside and how each ingredient plays a part in a good night’s sleep.

L-Tryptophan (250 mg)

Your body can’t make L-tryptophan on its own, so you have to get it from food or supplements. Once you have it, your body turns it into serotonin and then into melatonin. So in a sense, this is where good sleep begins.

Vitamin B6 (5 mg)

Vitamin B6 helps your body turn tryptophan into serotonin. Sleep Formula uses pyridoxal-5-phosphate, the active form of B6 your body works with. Many B6 supplements use a different form that your body has to convert first.

Niacin (5 mg)

When niacin runs low, your body can pull from its tryptophan supply to make more. Getting niacin directly may help leave more tryptophan available for serotonin.

L-Theanine (100 mg)

If you have ever felt calm but alert after a cup of tea, L-theanine may be part of the reason. It’s linked to alpha brain waves, which show up when you are relaxed but awake. For a racing mind like mine, this one stands out.

Passion Flower (250 mg)

Passion flower is a flowering vine that people have long used to help them relax. It appears to support GABA, a brain chemical that helps quiet nerve activity. In other words, it may help calm the mental chatter that keeps you up (AKA the “what-ifs” I mentioned earlier).

Valerian Root (25 mg)

This is the ingredient my friends had talked about. People have used valerian root for centuries to help with relaxation and sleep. Sleep Formula’s extract contains a consistent 0.8% valerenic acid, a compound that appears to work with GABA receptors in the brain.

Chamomile (25 mg)

Chamomile contains apigenin, a plant compound that binds to calming receptors in the brain. It is the same flower behind the chamomile tea I had tried before.

Melatonin (2 mg)

Your body naturally releases melatonin when it gets dark, signaling that it is time to sleep. Sleep Formula has 2 mg, less than half of what I used to take on its own. I was skeptical about the lower amount at first. However, this combination has worked far better for me than the higher dose ever did.

What I Noticed in the First Few Weeks of Sleep Formula

I took my first capsule about 30 minutes before bed. Within 10 minutes of lying down, I was asleep. The next thing I knew, it was morning. I remember how surprised I felt that it was already light outside, because nights like that were so rare for me.

Better yet, I did not wake up groggy, which had been a worry of mine. Over the next few weeks, sleeping through the night stopped being a rare event and became the norm.

One thing I want to be clear about: Sleep Formula does not knock me out. I still wake up if I hear a noise. It simply helps me sleep better.

My Nightly Sleep Formula Routine Years Later

Three and a half years later, my routine is still simple. I take one capsule on an empty stomach about 30 minutes before bed, just like the label says. Most nights, I fall asleep quickly and sleep until my alarm goes off. Because I sleep better, my days are so much better, too. Even with a 4:45 a.m. alarm, I feel more awake and ready to take on the day.

If I forget to take it, I can tell. My thoughts start racing again, and it takes much longer to fall asleep. That is why I keep a backup bottle at home and another one in my purse in case I forget to pack it when I travel.

Other Habits That Help Me Sleep

Sleep Formula is a big part of my routine, but it’s not the only thing that helps. Here’s what else works for me:

  • No caffeine after 4 p.m.: Caffeine sticks around in your body for hours. On the days I grab a big tea late in the afternoon, I can tell at bedtime.
  • A cool room: I keep my bedroom cold. Your body temperature naturally drops as you get ready to sleep, so a cooler room helps you sleep better.
  • A dark room: My room stays dark, too. Darkness is what tells your body it’s time to make melatonin, so even a little light can throw things off.
  • Magnesium threonate some nights: On some nights, I add magnesium threonate. Magnesium supports a calm nervous system, and this form may reach the brain more easily
  • Screens off earlier (still working on this one): Honestly, I shut my computer off at 10 p.m., which only gives me 30 minutes before bed. Screen light can interfere with melatonin, so I know getting off earlier would be better. Maybe one day I’ll try it.

Before you start any sleep supplement, talk with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications. This step matters most if you take medications that affect mood or sleep, because tryptophan and melatonin can interact with some of them. Also, of course, avoid driving or operating machinery after taking it.

Final Thoughts on My Sleep Formula Review

I spent most of my life lying awake at night. Now, sleeping through the night is my norm. Sleep Formula has been part of my routine for three and a half years, and I do not plan to change that.

If your mind keeps you up at night too, Sleep Formula may be worth a try. You can also call the Certified Nutritionists at 281-646-1659 to talk through what might work best for you.
