In 1987, at the age of 73, my father underwent coronary angioplasty to relieve chest pain caused by coronary artery disease. The operation proved disastrous. Two weeks later, my father read a health newsletter that reported the benefits of nutritional supplements for coronary artery disease, and turned to me with the question, “What do you recommend?” At the time, I had to answer, “What in the world do I know about vitamins? I’m a doctor.” He asked me to find out about vitamins, and so I did.

As I delved into the research on vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, I found that the typical American diet consists of packaged and processed foods that are depleted of most of their vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals provide the nutritional foundation for a healthy immune system; yet, most of us do not get what we need from the foods we eat. Therefore, vitamin and mineral supplementation is essential. This conviction led to the formation of Physicians Preference Vitamins, formerly known as Hotze Vitamins, a vitamin and mineral company established to ensure that my patients had access to high-quality, high-potency nutritional supplements.
